How Do Flower Fundraisers for School Help the Environment?

Learn how flower fundraisers can help the environment. Contact JOCO Growers today to inquire about running a flower fundraiser at your school.

When you think about school fundraisers, you probably picture candy bars or novelty items. Have you ever wanted to hold a more meaningful event? Flower fundraising is an earth friendly alternative to raise money for your school.

In this blog, we’re going to explain all the ways flower fundraisers can help the environment. The TL;DR is that flower fundraisers:

  • Help pollinators like bees and butterflies,
  • Improve our air quality,
  • Create less waste than other fundraising products,
  • And can inspire students to take up gardening and other green hobbies

Ways Flower Fundraisers Help the Environment

Flowers Support Pollinators

Flower fundraisers can fill your community with hundreds of flowers, which helps pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Bees and butterflies need nectar—the sugary liquid that flowers make—to survive. It’s their main food source. Butterflies eat up the nectar itself. Bees bring the nectar back to their hive to turn it into honey.

Here’s the beautiful part. The bees and butterflies also get stuck with a lot of pollen as they’re collecting their nectar. So when they fly from flower to flower to collect the nectar, they’re also fertilizing all the flowers. This leads to more flowers and a healthier ecosystem.

So the pollinators get the nectar they need and the flowers get help moving their pollen to other plants so they can reproduce. This is what ecologists call a symbiotic relationship. It’s a win-win.

When hundreds of your school’s families buy flowers through your fundraiser, your neighborhoods will be filled with flowers. You get the pretty flowers, and the pollinators get the nectar. Another win-win!

Plants Improve Air Quality

Plants also help the environment by improving air quality through photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is when plants take in sunlight, water, and CO2 to make the sugars they need to grow. They take in the carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air. In other words, plants help purify our air! That’s flower power.

Flower leaves are also natural air filters. The leaves trap dust and other small airborne particles, which can improve your indoor air quality.

Now, we know what you’re thinking—will buying flowers really make a noticeable difference?

A single plant or flower bed won’t change the air quality of an entire city. But running a flower fundraiser through your school spreads flowers across your community, and that impact adds up!

Flower Fundraisers Involve Less Waste Than Other Fundraisers

Flower fundraisers are also better for the environment because they don’t create a lot of waste.

A lot of products in the fundraising world are foods or novelty items that are packaged in single-use plastics. All those candy wrappers, plastic tubs, popcorn tins, trinkets, and coupon books get trashed.

Flowers, on the other hand, are living products. They’re organic. They can be composted instead of being thrown in a landfill. Plants do come in pots and trays, but the overall waste footprint is much lower compared to plastic-based products.

Plant Sales Can Inspire School Gardens or Community Gardens

Plant sales are a great opportunity to get kids interested in gardening. You might even spark enough interest to start a school garden or a local community garden.

A school garden program is a great idea if you want to give students a hands-on place to learn outside the classroom. Some teachers have started gardening clubs to teach their students how seeds sprout and how roots work.

Flower fundraisers can also encourage students to participate in their community gardens. Community gardens are a great way to meet other people who are interested in helping the environment.

FAQs About Flower Fundraising

Do your flower fundraisers give schools high returns?

Our fundraisers often deliver high returns for schools because flowers are a popular seasonal item. Raising funds is easier when you’re offering something people were going to buy anyways.

What flower products do you offer? Do you sell growing kits?

We offer two annual flower fundraisers across the Midwest: you can participate in our BLOOM Spring Flower Fundraiser and our Fall Harvest Mum Buddies Fundraiser. We give you all the promotional resources you’ll need. We do not offer growing kits or flower bulbs at this time.

Can my school participate in both of your fundraisers every year?

Yes! You can participate in one or both of our flower fundraisers. Contact us today to learn more about our fall and spring flower fundraisers.

Do you deliver the flowers to our school?

Yes! We’ll schedule your delivery day at the very beginning of your fundraiser so you can plan for it.

Do you offer schools free shipping?

Yes, we offer free shipping to all schools in Ohio and any school within 3 hours’ drive of our locations in Cincinnati and Cleveland. This includes areas around Detroit, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, Wheeling, and Pittsburgh.

Do you offer a flower quality guarantee?

Yes. If you get any complaints, just forward them to us and we’ll take care of your customers. Leave the customer service to us.

Is this really better for the environment than selling other products?

Yes! Flower fundraisers are an eco-friendly fundraising idea. And the flowers are an investment in your local environment. Flowers help pollinators and purify the air through photosynthesis. And the overall waste footprint of a flower fundraiser is generally lower than other fundraisers.
